ok, I found the cause.
After having checked the Windows XP registry, I had the idea of also checking the Windows Mobile registry.
BirdieSync left two keys (without values) in the registry as subkeys under:
\\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Windows CE Services\Synchronization\Objects
I deleted the keys and everything works again.
So the PocketPC uninstall is not proper.
