Connection between Thunderbird & BirdieSync is cycling

Thunderbird 52.0.0 and BirdieSync 3.1.0.0 beta 1 worked fine - no issues detected.
Thunderbird then did an automatic update to 52.0.1 and I noticed the following problems:

- BirdieSync started using significant Processor resources and showing "Not Responding" errors.
- Attempts to sync between Thunderbird and an iPhone failed.
- The connection between Thunderbird and BirdieSync (as seen in toolbar in Thunderbird) was cycling between connected & not connected.
- Status text showed:
- Listing Address Book
- Listing Calendar events
- Connected to 127.0.0.1
- Repeat cycle
